You asked us which one of the characters we felt sorry for the most. I would probably have to say the father. He has to go to war, yes he does make it home safely. When he gets home all he seems to want is to spend some time with his wife, and he pushes his son out of the way. Later when his wife has another child and is pushed away himself, it is then that he realizes how he treated his own son.
