The point that Gatsby did not even know half the people at the party is beside the point, it was just the essence of such effort that went into holding these parties. Gatsby was that kind of man though, the impossible for others was the easy for him. There was no way anyone would outdo Gatsby, he just would not hear of it. It was one of those subconscious things people do.
