desperately needs companionship and equality. He has the intelligence of
any of the workers, but they don't listen to him because he is black..

.... still weaker than Crooks, and Crooks takes the opportunity
to pass along some abuse, to take it out on someone else. He tells Lennie
that George isn't coming back just to see a reaction. Crooks then realizes
what he is doing to Lennie is what is happening to him. Crooks doesn't
appear to have any hope left until Candy arrives and describes to him the
dream George, Lennie, and Candy were sharing. For a brief moment in the
novel Crooks shows hope.
When Candy finally convinces Crooks that their own ranch was
